For the past six years, International Living, an organization that promotes retirement abroad for North Americans, has named Panama as the Number One place in the world for US citizens wanting to retire abroad. During the first eleven months of 2006, nearly 10,000 permanent visas were given out by the Panamanian government, mostly to new permanent residents--retirees. While there are hundreds of condominiums and apartments available in Panama City, the stock of existing homes in the beach areas has been largely depleted. The remaining stock is largely of the “weekender-type” house, lacking in the kinds of conveniences that most expatriates expect.

Significant infrastructure has built up around Coronado, and today there is nothing lacking for a convenient and comfortable life. American-style supermarkets and pharmacies; fresh-fish markets on the beach, where fish can be purchased directly from the fishermen; electric and telephone service; internet service at prices lower than the US; excellent medical care at remarkably reasonable prices; shopping malls in Panama City that rival any in Florida with lower prices on nearly everything—all these and more make for an extremely attractive life for retirees on a relatively restricted income.
We are building mid-range comfortable homes, approximately 1,600 square feet, with three bedrooms and three baths (or two bedrooms and an office/den). The homes range in price from $180,000 to $250,000, including the land, depending on location and “extras.”.
